Bringing Tax Relief to Seniors

One of the most prominent policies the Boone County Commission has implemented recently is the property tax freeze for seniors. This program, originating from the passage of Senate Bill 190 in 2023 and refined by the Senate in 2024, requires a delicate balance: How does the Commission maximize the benefit to Boone County seniors while ensuring that taxing districts, such as school districts, don’t suffer due to lost revenue? This is certainly a challenge, but Janet Thompson and her fellow commissioners have worked tirelessly to ensure a balance.

In a March 20th interview with KFRU’s Simon Rose, Janet described this balance as a “titration,” highlighting the scientific nature of this process. Just like a chemical solution, there are several different components that need to be balanced in this policy. The concerns of school districts and other taxing entities, public input from the community, and requirements in the original and updated Senate bills, as well as the state constitution, all have to be considered in this process. With her expertise as a lawyer and a longtime public servant, Janet Thompson possesses the skill set required for this complex role, and four more years of her leadership will ensure that all perspectives will be considered when writing county policy.

Applications for the senior property tax freeze are now available both online at https://www.showmeboone.com/collector/senior-re-tax-relief.asp and at the County Collector’s office.
